Published! Bryan University Faculty Co-Author Textbook Chapter

Big things are always happening behind the scenes at Bryan University! Recently, our Business Program Director, Dr. Jennifer Newmann, and business faculty member Marius Rosedale co-authored chapter 14, Online Educational Leadership Perspectives: Higher Education in a Post Pandemic Society in the book Diverse Leadership Perspectives in Education: From K-12 to Higher Education.

In their chapter, Dr. Newmann and Rosedale discuss adult learners returning to higher education, their unique needs and motivations, and various types of programs from vocational and technical training to micro-credentials and degree programs. Their chapter also explores the long-term impacts of the COVID-19 pandemic, the ongoing impact of the digital revolutions and emergent technologies, as well as the growing importance of workforce development as a major point of interest for leaders in higher education.

“The inspiration for our chapter came easily: it is dedicated to the adult, returning, online learners we serve at Bryan University,” Dr. Newmann said. “These learners are often the most underrepresented voices in conversations about leadership in higher education. The work we describe in this chapter reflects our daily efforts — guiding students through personal and academic transformation to help them build better futures for themselves and their families.”

In addition to focusing on adult learners, the chapter highlights learning online — the importance of it and how it’s starting to outpace traditional campus-based learning.

“The ideas we present in this chapter are foundational to both faculty and educational leadership at Bryan University. This shared philosophy is one of the key reasons Marius and I choose to work at BU,” Dr. Newmann said. “The university’s mission — and its student-centered approach to the relationship between teaching and learning — deeply aligns with our own professional values and practices. We view our learners as extraordinary individuals in pursuit of personal and professional transformation. It is a privilege to support them on their educational journeys and to celebrate their growth and achievements alongside them.”

Dr. Newmann hopes those who read this chapter, from students and educators to industry professionals, gain a deeper understanding of the unique needs and strengths of adult online learners. She hopes it helps other educators teach and support these students.

For other educators looking to publish, Dr. Newmann advises: “Start with your curiosity. Focus on the questions that keep you wondering — especially the ones where answers aren’t readily available. These are often the best starting points for meaningful research. ”

Congratulations to Dr. Newmann and Rosedale for highlighting the value of online learning and supporting adult student success through this important publication!
