Bryan University Students Visit Washington, D.C. in Successful Advocacy Trip

In April, a group of Bryan University Health Information Management (HIM) and Paralegal Studies students were given the incredible opportunity to experience the inner workings of the federal government firsthand in Washington, D.C.

The advocacy trip, made possible by the Healthcare Information and Management Systems Society (HIMSS) Arizona Chapter, allowed students to visit historic American landmarks, interact with important government officials, and learn how to promote grassroots efforts in the healthcare information space.

During the trip, students were given the rare opportunity to meet with a Supreme Court justice and elected state representatives.

“This once-in-a-lifetime experience assisted in bridging the gap between theory and practice in their education. Furthermore, this direct engagement with decision-makers allowed students to comprehend the intricacies of the legislative process and witness the impact of policies. Such interactions and experiences provided a unique perspective going beyond classroom learning, encouraging critical thinking and inspiring a passion for active citizenship,” the HIMSS AZ Chapter said.

Students were also able to explore the roots of American democracy by visiting sites like the White House and the U.S. Capitol Building, where pivotal decisions are made.

The trip was designed to give students an immersive experience and a deeper understanding of the democratic process, inspire civic engagement, and foster community among the group. The trip created lasting connections and a supportive network by bringing the online students together in person.

“Through this trip, we aspire to equip students with the knowledge, inspiration, and connections necessary to become the next generation of leaders, overcoming barriers and contributing to a more inclusive and diverse future,” the HIMSS AZ Chapter said.
