This month-long celebration started as a recognition of Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual and Transgender Americans. LGBT Pride Month is celebrated annually in June to honor the 1969 Stonewall riots. The goal is to not only bring awareness but to also help LGBT Americans achieve equal justice and equal opportunity. More recently the addition of questioning or queer Americans “Q” has been added, and the acronym is written as LGBTQ.
In June of 1969, supporters of the Stonewall Inn in New York City staged an uprising in order to resist the constant police harassment that LGBTQ Americans were often subjected to. This uprising marked the beginning of a movement to outlaw discriminatory practices and in some instances laws against LGBTQ Americans.
Celebrations today include: pride parades, backyard parties, educational workshops, music offerings, etc. that often attract millions of participants around the U.S. and the world. To learn more about LGBTQ pride month we encourage you to do some additional research of your own, as we all continue to work toward a society that is inclusive and equitable for all.
