Celebrating the Life of Martin Luther King Jr

By: Chestiny Fair, MS, Bryan University Faculty and IDEA Committee Member

Martin Luther King Jr

On Saturday, January 15th, we celebrate the birthday of Martin Luther King Jr., and the federal holiday honoring his legacy on Monday, January 17th.

He was one of the most influential speakers and leaders in U.S. history. He was the youngest recipient of the Nobel Peace Prize at the age of thirty-five and the driving force behind watershed Civil Rights events such as the Montgomery Bus Boycott from 1955 to 1956 and the 1963 March on Washington. These events catalyzed landmark legislation including the Civil Rights Act of 1964 and the Voting Rights Act of 1965.

King spoke for community, empowerment, and nonviolence. We celebrate the life and leadership of Martin Luther King, Jr. and encourage you to learn more about his legacy of peace, hope, equity, and progress.

“Our lives begin to end the day we become silent about things that matter.”

– Martin Luther King Jr.
