At Bryan University, we love being able to spotlight our incredible graduates and this month we’re highlighting Kaytlen Calhoun, who graduated from BU with an Associate Degree in Graphic Design and UX/UI Design. She said the support she received at BU helped her balance a busy life as a mom with her school work.
“As a mom of six, being able to do this with assistance on learning how to balance everything, it just kept me dedicated. Just keep your grit,” she said. “Keep your why — that’s one thing I love about Bryan is they make you do that. Why are you here right from the beginning? They really remind you to stick to it.”
Her advice for other moms who want to go back to school: stay determined.
“Keep pushing yourself to keep going, no matter how hard it gets. Just to be able to experience being in school, and that feeling of accomplishment, it’s just so worth it. The teachers are there for you, they guide you through the course and they just really inspire you.”
When Kaytlen decided to go back to school, she found Bryan University while searching for schools online. “One day I was like, I’m just ready. I felt it in my heart, and I’m a spiritual person so I prayed. I think I called two colleges before I found Bryan,” she said.
She said she didn’t feel a connection with the other schools she reached out to but with BU she had a hunch.
“As soon as I got an answer, as soon as somebody picked up the phone on the other line with Bryan University, I was immediately turned on by it. I was happy. I liked the way they handled things. They made me feel like I was walking into their building and being greeted,” she said. “That feeling stuck throughout the whole course. Even though it was online, I felt like I was there. The teachers cared and they wanted you to succeed.”
As a lifelong lover of the arts, she was drawn to the graphic design program after she started monetizing videos on Facebook and realized she was interested in learning more about video editing. She loved immersing herself into the world of design during the UX/UI courses and being able to watch her skills grow with each new assignment.
Her favorite part about learning online was being able to do it at her own pace and knowing that if she needed anything, her instructors were there to help.
If you’re considering a program at Bryan University, her advice is to just go for it.
“It was the best decision and it’s not anything to do with my courses — it’s everything to do with the people. All of the staff, all of the professors, even the people who answer the phone to get you started. They care. They are so interested in helping you succeed with what you are going to school for so definitely just go for it.”
