Behind the Scenes at Bryan University: Financial Aid Analyst Alex LaFlam

A smiling woman wearing glasses

We love spotlighting our employees at Bryan University, and this month we’re featuring Financial Aid Analyst Alex LaFlam!

Alex joined Bryan University three years ago after a referral from a family friend. “It’s been an incredible experience ever since,” she said. She recently stepped into her new role as a Financial Aid Analyst after serving as a Financial Aid Lead for the intake team. In her role, she sets up financial aid, coordinates tuition funding, and guides students through their financial aid options.

“What I enjoy most is helping students make sense of something that can feel overwhelming. I love being able to educate them, answer their questions, and give them confidence about their financial decisions,” she said.

She noted that some people don’t realize this role can involve detective-like work — figuring out what’s missing and making everything add up. “It’s all part of making sure students get the support they need, and yes, it keeps things interesting!”

She describes her team as collaborative, supportive, and always student-focused. “We work hard, get things done, and somehow manage to sneak in a little humor when the day gets busy.”

A competitive spirit drives her work, too. She often looks at her teammates’ numbers and sets challenges for herself to hit or beat them. “It keeps me motivated and pushing forward every day,” she said.

She loves the flexibility in her role at BU, as well as the occasional in-person training where she can connect with colleagues. “It’s the perfect mix of independence and connection,” Alex said.

Outside of work, she loves to spend time with her husband and five animals — two dogs and three cats! She added, “I also enjoy being outdoors. Hikes, walks, or anything that gets me into nature when it’s not ridiculously hot! And of course, I love hanging out with friends and family, exploring fun activities around the valley.”

Music is another essential part of her life. “It sets the tone for my day-to-day life and always makes even the ordinary moments a little more enjoyable,” she said.

The best piece of advice she’s received? Focus on the plan, not the feeling. “It’s a lifesaver for workouts, keeping plans with friends, or any time I’m tempted to procrastinate. Basically, stick with the plan even when you don’t feel like it. It keeps me moving and accountable, and helps me avoid talking myself out of things that are good for me,” she said.

To anyone considering a career at BU, she says, “If you’re looking for a job with great work-life balance, solid benefits, and free tuition, this is it. The work is rewarding, the team is supportive, and the flexibility of remote work makes it easy to fit your life around your career — what’s not to love?”
