Get to know Misty Vazquez, a graduate of Bryan University’s Associate Degree in Accounting! During her program, she loved the business administration classes she took and now she aspires to go back to school again to earn her Bachelor’s Degree in Human Resources.
Misty found Bryan University while searching online and was drawn to the program because she could fit it into her busy schedule as a mom and full-time employee. She said earning her degree helped her get her foot in the door as a Patient Encounter Specialist at a hospital; she aims to further her career there as she continues her education.
She said her experience at BU exceeded her expectations.
“I was terrified, knowing that I wanted to do this to better the situation that my family’s in, but I also was afraid that I would fail because of limitations on time,” she said. “But the program exceeded my expectations because I could go at my own pace. Yes deadlines were still there and I had to meet them, but it was feasible. It gives people like me a chance to progress and move forward in their life without having to neglect everything else.”
She enjoyed meeting with her instructors and the structure being more of a conversation than a lecture. She said being a self-motivator was the hardest thing with learning online.
“You have to really want it and I mean it’s not difficult, but you have to want it,” she said. “There are two words that really stuck out to me in one of my first classes and that’s dips and grit. To have that grit to get through the dips. You have to have that determination. There are days, everybody has them. They’re hard, and you want to just have had enough, but you motivate yourself. If you really want it, you can get it.”
She said using a planner helped her to stay on track and hold herself accountable. She also credited having a solid support system at home and a great husband who helped her.
Her advice for other students is to never be afraid to reach out to their instructors, to be transparent if they’re going through something, or if they need help.
“They understand. They’re everyday people just like we are,” she said. “They are the most reasonable and best cheerleaders you can get.”
She wants others to know they can do anything if they put their mind to it.
“Fear is going to be your greatest enemy. When I started at Bryan University, after that initial fear, it was smooth sailing,” she said. “Your instructors are always there to help. Email them, reach out to them. They will go over things, they will set up extra time.”
She also encourages other BU students to talk to fellow students and use the resources available to them, like a dedicated career services advisor.
“Use your resources, you’re not alone. Again, there’s other people out there that feel exactly the way you do and have felt the way you have. Now they’re here to help you and they’ll help you get through it. So the biggest advice I can give is use your resources. Don’t let fear stop you, and keep your grit,” she said.
And for other moms, she wants them to know they can do it too.
“There are other moms out there that feel like they can’t do it. If I can do it, then they can do it too,” she said. “Bryan University really helped me open up new doors and possibilities that I never knew existed.”
